Ghost

I sense somethin’ that isn’t here
I hear a creakin’ in the hall
I feel a presence I cannot touch
I’m seeing shadows on the wall

You know I think this house is haunted
But not by some kind of Ghost
It’s haunted by the memory
Of the one I love the most

I feel a chill as I lie sleeping
I smell a scent that’s in the air
A warm breath across the back of my neck
I turn around and you’re not there

You’ll be gone a month on Sunday
An’ every night I lay down and cry
I wake up on tear stained pillows
and I curse these Ghosts of mine

Blue, Blue Eyes

We Picnic on the Bayou
Beneath the Summer skies
Sunshine warms your pretty face
And Lights up your blue…. blue, blue eyes

Could I steal a Kiss
Run my fingers through your hair
Let’s just hang out for hours
Like we ain’t got a care

And I think I see it all
When I look into your blue…. blue, blue eyes…. blue, blue eyes

You’re dancing in a sunbeam
Hair swaying on the breeze
Thoughts of life together
They put my mind at ease

Many years from now
I know just where I’ll be
Staring at your pretty face
And you’ll ask me what I see

And I think I see it all
When I look into your blue…. blue, blue eyes…. blue, blue eyes

Midnight Song

The preacher came to see me
For the very last time
Soon I’ll take the long walk
And I’ll pay for my crimes

As Midnight fast approaches
It’s time to make my peace
Will I see the face of Jesus
Or feel the fury of the beast

The crows sing the midnight song
That tells me it won’t be long
To make right what I done wrong
The crows sing… the midnight song

Tell Momma that I love her
It ain’t her fault I’ll die
Don’t want this on her conscience
Lord knows that she tried

To raise me not so o’nery
livin’ by the good book
Sorry I got distracted
Taste of sin s’all it took

The crows sing the midnight song
That tells me it won’t be long
To make right what I done wrong
The crows sing… the midnight song

The preacher walks to my left
The Devil to my right
I have been a child of his
He’ll claim my soul tonight

When they strap me to the chair
Momma just look away
Pull that lever down quick Sir
and I’ll be on my way

The crows sing the midnight song
That tells me it won’t be long
To make right what I done wrong
The crows sing… the midnight song

Gaslight

You left me in the middle of the night
I never said I wanted you gone
You left me in a fog of mystery
Never knew what I did wrong

It might sound like an old story
Might sound like the same ol’ song
I got a message on the machine
You said you were movin’ on

The gaslight’s been on 10 miles
and I still got 30 to go
I’ve been drivin’ this car into the ground
‘Cause there’s somethin’ you gotta know

If your gone before I’m there
It’ll be a shame you never knew
My heart’s broke since you been gone
and I love you… baby I love you

You said you’re gone for good this time
You said you ain’t comin’ back
It was these words that killed my pride
It was time I had to act

If you make it to your Mom’s place
I ain’t got a chance in hell
She’ll be sayin’ I’s never any good
And if I’m gone it’s just as well

The gaslight’s been on 20 miles
and I still got 20 to go
I’ve been drivin’ this car into the ground
’cause there’s somethin’ you gotta know

If your gone before I’m there
It’ll be a shame you never knew
My heart’s broke since you been gone
and I love you… baby I love you

The gaslight’s been on 30 miles
now the engine light is on too
I’ve been drivin’ this car into the ground
’cause there’s somethin’ I just got to tell you

Peggy

Peggy called me up / for a favor last night
seems her and a John / got in bit of a fight
He agreed to the price / but didn’t want to pay
he busted her lip / and drove away

I picked her up / at the corner store
She got in the back / threw her purse down on the floor
Peggy’s in the back seat / with a needle to a vein
Trying like hell / to ease the pain

Peggy used to be / my young brother’s wife
he was killed in an alley / by a swicthblade knife
They alway lived rough / strung out on drugs
and those poor choices / are catchin’ up

I picked her up / at the corner store
She got in the back / threw her purse Down on the floor
Peggy’s in the back seat / with a gun up to her head
she couldn’t kill the painl / he’d rather be dead

I told Peggy / forget her wicked days
she gonna get herself killed / she keeps going on this way
She ain’t ever sure / she wants to live or she wants to die
but I still see life / in her eyes

I picked her up / at the corner store
She got in the back / threw her purse down on the floor
Peggy’s in the back seat / I think she’s changed her mind
she’s talking to Jesus/ with tears in her eyes

She’s talking to Jesus…. with tears in her eyes

Peggy’s in the back seat

Prayin’ For Rain

The Sun’s Been Shining / Down On Me
But those Bright Skies / I don’t want to see
The Ground is Hard / The Soil is Dry
Crops are turning brown / They’re Gonna Die

I’m Prayin’ for rain / I’m wishin’ for storms
I’m hopin’ the sun / Don’t burn up my corn
Do you hear me Lord / Listen to my plea
A Good Days rain / Is all I need / It’s all I Need

I Make My Living / Living off the land
Ground was first plowed / By Grandpa’s hand
My Daddy Died here / Gave blood to dirt
I’ll give mine too / For all it’s worth

A banker came by / said he meant no harm
If I lose this crop / I’ll lose my farm
The rows are dry / soil is dust
If the harvest dies / The Farm goes bust

Tracks

Let’s go down to the railroad track, see what we might find
Jump a big freight-liner, leave this town behind
‘Cause I got my gun an’ I got my girl, to me that is enough
You can give my things to the poor on the street… I don’t need that stuff

Goin’ on a fast train, I ain’t coming back
Goin’ on a fast train till we run outta tracks
Goin’ on a fast train, we ain’t coming back
Goin’ on a fast train till we run outta tracks

Down by the river and up through the pines to a brand new place we go
Like a carnival ride where she stops ain’t no body knows
We’ll chase the moon till the sun comes up an’ then we’ll chase some more
Border to border and coast to coast, till we reach that distant shore

Goin’ on a fast train, we ain’t coming back
Goin’ on a fast train till we run outta tracks
Goin’ on a fast train, we ain’t coming back
Goin’ on a fast train till we run outta tracks

Tell your dad you’re gone, kiss your ma goodbye.. bid them all fair well
See ‘em again in heaven ‘less we go to hell
For the things we do when we get out into that big ol’ world
But I’ll take the chance on a devil’s dance for you my blue-eyed girl

Goin’ on a fast train, we ain’t coming back
Goin on a fast train till we run outta tracks
Goin’ on a fast train, we ain’t coming back
Goin on a fast train till we run outta tracks

Downtrodden Prayer

I can’t sleep though I’m tired, I got this deep down desire / to try to pull myself up from all this muck and mire
I got the chills the other day, someone walked across my grave / and I know it won’t be long till I get back what I gave

I’ve been down too long,
Singing the same sad song,
Wishin’ the Lord would grant me peace and I could find where I belong

I’ve seen trouble fall like rain, I’ve seen good folks live in pain / while the wicked die in their sleep and the saints they die in vain
What don’t kill me makes me strong, well friend I say your wrong / ’cause the devil you know he beat me down an’ when I woke up you were gone

Dear Lord what will it take for me to catch a break / to rise up like a phoenix out of this world of snakes
My anger how is shakes and my heart how it aches / for me to find my place among the poets and the saints

Bare Bones

I stand before you.. meek and humble,
Victories and faults on display
Time has taken.. it’s toll on me,
I pray to God that I’ll find the way

Flesh and Blood..
they rot on the surface,
We all know..
it’s a long way home,
And I stand..
naked here before you,
Dusty wind..
blowin’ through Bare Bones

Sin and shame.. they both know my name,
they’ve both played a part in my wicked ways
I’ve dwelled in darkness.. far to long now,
I’d kill the night just to save the day

Would you take me.. as I am,
Or would you need a pound of flesh
Would you shed.. your Mercy on me,

’cause dust and bones is all that I have left

Backwoods

Vampires and Werewolves, are out on patrol
Over the hills and through the woods, searchin’ for a lost soul
One will suck you dry, the other ‘ll clean your bones
The sky is growin’ dark, I suggest you just stay home

Cause there’s things in these ol’ backwoods,
Lies will never save
They’ll all think you’re crazy,
So you take ‘em to your grave
Yeah you’re crazy if you speak of,
So you take ‘em… to your grave

The devil’s down in Dixie, at this place I’ve never seen
It ain’t like heaven or hell, but somewhere in between
And there are angels on the tree tops, snakes down in the dirt
The devil’s dancing around the fire, but I ain’t sayin’ a word

There’s old men and there’s moonshine, game of stud by a whiskey still
There’s blood and there’s money, secrets for which they’d kill
And you’ve got pine-tops an’ the riverbeds, ghost by a hanging tree
Things that words just can’t describe, you gotta see ‘em to believe
